Is this a case of biting the hands that feed you? Well no. It’s the complete opposite.

Netdisaster, an ultra popular site that allows you to defame snapshots of any website on the Internet garnered a Yahoo! award in 2005 for innovation. Today, Netdisaster blocks the very awarding body that gave it praise three years ago. And this comes from a bout with Yahoo! itself having flagged Netdisaster as a potential Phishing site.

Yahoo! is now blocked from Netdisaster: « I’m not sure you have the authority to use this kind of site using yahoo logo and form so I suggest you keep this site blocked from the innovation mechanism. »
Of course, everyone sees the surreal part of it: Yahoo!, the very site that rewards Netdisaster on the one hand, asks to be blocked from Netdisaster on the other hand… [Netdisaster]

Can you blame Yahoo!? Well maybe not. It sure does look like all the components for phishing are present - entering a URL and the possibility of it being masked, and a “social” way to share these disaster. But this is also what happens to big companies that become paranoid of the “possibilities” when all Netdisaster ever wanted was a bit of fun on the side.

Dear Yahoo! … why so serious?

Within every press conference is the famed guest list where members of the media RSVP to attend exclusive launches run the beat. Some events are pretty much lax when it comes to press exclusivity. A guy can walk in and say he’s from “Wheelbarrow Unlimited” for a tech product launch and the guy at the registration table will let him in. Others are more stringent, seeing that the event is not covered by your niche, and you weren’t invited - they won’t let you in. But let them in they do - what have they got to lose? What’s one more guest, let alone the opportunity to top up your product’s media value if your new phone launch does appear on “Wheelbarrow Unlimited.”

PR firms always can double check anyway, and see if the guy’s legit. But what happens when you can’t verify on the spot if your journo is with a particular magazine? What if the guest is a blogger who doesn’t answer to an editor or a “higher power” save his hosting service?

I say, allow them to register. Allow them to come in. Allow them to cover the event. Take note of their blog URL and engage them in dialogue. After all, PR is all about conversation and lasting relationships. But never, ever treat them badly.

Or learn to apologize.

It’s true. It’s been done and the science all adds up. We finally have an alternative source of electricity - raw enough (hyuk!) to charge your iPod at 5 volts. There is a DIY tutorial that explains the science and the procedure behind it.

When you put two different metals - say, copper and zinc - in an acidic medium such as a fruit or vegetable and connect them up on the outside, they go bananas (to stick to fruit terms) and start trading ions and electrons between each other as fast as they can.

The copper acts as a positive terminal and the zinc as the negative one - just like a car battery, which uses neither fruit nor onion, but sulphuric acid.

It is the different chemical reactions of the acid on each metal that causes an electrical charge to flow between these two terminals.

In the author’s experiments, one lemon plugged into the solution gives you about half a volt while 8 onions give you five volts. Interesting. The charge doesn’t last too long and you might be burning through onions rather quickly.

Here’s a chart from WIRED Magazine that illustrates the physical growth of the turkey as generations come to pass. Interesting isn’t it?

Anderson, who has bred the birds for 26 years, said the key technical advance was artificial insemination, which came into widespread use in the 1960s, right around the time that turkey size starts to skyrocket. The reason is that turkeys over 30 pounds are “inefficient” breeders: It’s difficult for them to actually perform the natural mating act. With artificial insemination, the largest birds can still be used as sires, even if they have a hard time walking, let alone engaging in sexual reproduction.[source]

Thank you, technology for making our turkeys freakier, but more economic!

Ah Black Friday is but two days away. With promos, promos, promos everywhere for US citizens, the rest of the world can only watch. You see, the success of sales results of Black Friday spell a lot of things for many countries who have a stake in the after sales support, mostly for tech products. Good sales equates to a robust after sales support team. Bad sales equates to proof of concept that indeed, America is truly undergoing a recession.

Back in October, Wallet Pop did a short speculation on the Black Friday recession for 2008:

Black Friday needs only three things to be successful: retailers with amazing deals, willing consumers and money. Without any one of these items Black Friday ceases to be the spectacle that retailers and shoppers have come to know and love. In order to understand how the economy affects any of these three elements it is important to understand the relationship between retailers and consumers.

Will the economic recession affect this year’s Black Friday mayhem? There have been surveys that the recession indeed has hit with XBOX 360’s being replaced with shirts and jeans for the holiday stockings. Black Friday is America’s last line of consumer hope to see whether a recession is indeed affecting her.

You can steal my money and the keys but never, ever steal a geek’s laptop. There’s a Perk in Fallout 3 called Nerd Rage and I guess this is exactly what got handed over to a certain Gabriel Saucedo (happy photo up there) after he suggested stealing a law student’s laptop.

Good afternoon Internet!
To brighten up the gloomy mood (so much news today about the recession), here is an 8 bit video game made in honor of the next President of the USA: Super Obama World. Don’t forget to collect the flags!

It’s pretty neat, albeit here he looks more like Bill Cosby.
